Biosynthesis and
metabolic engineering
of betalains

Betalains are plant pigments found only in plants of the Caryophyllales order (e.g. red beet), where they are assumed to be involved in various roles, including attraction of pollinators and protection from biotic and abiotic stress. We are interested in identifying the genes involved in their biosynthesis, degradation, and regulation, and understanding the roles betalains play in plants.

Understanding chemical defenses of wheat and barley

Wheat and barley are globally important food and feed crops, which are susceptible to various diseases and pests that lead to significant yield losses. We aim to identify the molecules which they produce in response to biotic stresses such as infection by fungal and bacterial pathogens. We also seek to understand how these metabolites are produced in the plant, and how they contribute to its protection against pests and pathogens.
